About the Artist

Biography

bell hooks (1952–2021) was a trailblazing American author, feminist, and cultural critic. Born Gloria Jean Watkins, she used her maternal great-grandmother's name, spelled in lowercase, to draw focus to her ideas rather than her personal identity. Her pioneering work examined the intersections of race, gender, class, and capitalism.
